September is National Sewing Month
The observance of September as National Sewing Month began with a proclamation from President Ronald Reagan. In 1982, he declared this special month-long celebration “In recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.” Subsequent Proclamations declared that “Tens of millions of Americans sew at home. Their efforts demonstrate the industry, the skill and the self-reliance which are so characteristic of this Nation.”
National Sewing Month is the recognition of a creative form of self-expression that we celebrate in September, but enjoy all year long. The month-long Open House of retailers, bloggers, online stores, schools, organizations, individuals and more is a great time to renew interest, share ideas, be inspired, expand your knowledge and express your creativity. Happy sewing!
The Orange County Chapter of the American Sewing Guild was started in 1981, when ASG was still affiliated with the American Home Sewing Association. For all those years, we’ve been focused on ASG’s mission, advancing sewing as an art and life skill.
Neighborhood Groups are an important part of our chapter where members can get together and share their love of all things sewing. It’s a great way to make friends and learn something new. We have biannual fashion shows to feature creations by our members, as well as workshops, trunk shows, and lecture/demo programs. Check out our calendar to find out what’s happening.
We have a long tradition of sewing for our local community, supplying clothing, bags, quilts and other items to hospitals, assisted living facilities, and foster care homes. Our chapter also awards scholarships to students of sewing-related fields, as well as sewing teachers in public and adult education schools.
